Mentha piperita plants are harvested in the morning, when their oil content is the highest; from there the oil goes into toothpastes, soaps, flavourings, and medicines, where its cooling effect and refreshing aroma make it one of the most prized essential oils in the world. The herb was used as a digestive aid by the ancient Egyptians, and dried peppermint leaves have even been found in Egyptian pyramids. Since its cultivation in England began in the 1700s, it has been used for everything from a stomach soother and anti-nausea aid to a menstrual pain remedy - and more recent research has found that Peppermint can help with focus, especially for tasks that require sustained attention. Oil from many species of the Mentha genus is often sold as Peppermint, but only Mentha piperita oil is considered true Peppermint.
